Save Haven Surrender Option: |
Giving up an animal can be a difficult and heart rending experience for a pet owner. Animal Humane Association of New Mexico’s Safe Haven Program is designed to give pet owners some peace of mind if they find themselves in this difficult situation. As a participant in the Safe Haven Program, your pet will go up for adoption for a ten day period. You will be notified if your animal has been adopted within that ten days, and if not adopted, you will be given the right to reclaim your pet within 24 hours of the conclusion of the ten day adoption period.
In order to take advantage of this program, you must acknowledge and agree to the following: |
1. |
My pet is in good health and free of contagious disease. |
2. |
My pet is of good temperament, is not aggressive and does not have a history of agression or biting. |
3. |
I will not visit my pet during the ten day adoption period (except to reclaim my pet), as this puts undue stress on the animal. |
4. |
All animals placed in the Safe Haven Program will be spayed or neutered, microchipped and given appropriate vaccinations prior to being adopted or reclaimed. The costs of these services are included in the Safe Haven Program fee. |
5. |
I will be notified when my pet has been adopted. |
6. |
If my pet has not been adopted in the ten day adoption period, I will be notified and given the option to reclaim my pet within 24 hours. |
7. |
In the event I do not reclaim my pet within 24 hours of the conclusion of the Safe Haven Agreement, the animal becomes the sole property of AHANM. At that time no further information will be given as to the future status of the animal. |
8. |
If my pet begins to show unacceptable/unadoptable behavior, including, but not limited to agression, biting, or severe separation resulting in self destruction or harm to itself or any other person, I will reclaim my pet or relinquish it to AHANM for euthanasia within 24 hours of notification. In this instance, I understand my pet will be immediately removed from the adoption area to prevent injury to any staff, volunteers, or members of the public. |
9. |
Animals in a shelter environment can be at risk to such disease as kennel cough, or upper respiratory infections or other more serious illnesses. If my pet contracts such disease, he or she will be treated by AHANM. However if my pet becomes seriously ill during his stay with AHANM, I will be notified and given the option of reclaiming my pet within 24 hours of notification. Failure to reclaim my pet within 24 hours of notification will result in a release of all rights to the animal to AHANM. |
10. |
Prior to an adoption, I may reclaim my pet at any time during the ten day adoption period subsequent to the animal being spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, and vaccinated. |
11. |
The Safe Haven Program fee is $150.00, due at the time this agreement is signed and the animal is left with AHANM. Only cash or credit card payments are acceptable. |
12. |
There are no refunds or pro-rations of the Safe Haven fee based on the number of days an animal may spend in the shelter prior to adoption or reclaim or for any other reason. |
13. |
If my pet has not been adopted within the Safe Haven Program period, a second ten day adoption period may be granted at the discretion of AHANM, based on the adoptability, health and overall behavior of the animal for an additional $150.00 program fee. |
14. |
I agree to release, discharge and hold AHANM harmless from any and all liabilities AHANM may incur in connection with this program, including without limitation the injury, illness, escape or death of the animal. |

| Temp Foster Parents Needed! |
Throughout the year, we need temporary foster homes for kittens/puppies that are too young for adoption, orphaned kitten or puppy "bottle babies", and nursing litters of kittens and puppies with their mamas. Foster homes provide care for 2-8 weeks while the animals develop physically and learn socialization skills from their littermates and caretakers. Fosters are provided with everything they need: crates, bowls, ex-pens, cat condo's for litters of kittens, litter and pan, toys, towels, dry and moist food, formula and bottles -- all you need to provide is plenty of love and a safe home environment.
Often we take in dogs or puppies that have had no socialization with people or other animals. We utilize foster parents to rehabilitate shy, timid, fearful puppies, dogs or cats so they can learn to trust people and develop into adoptable pets.
Foster parents are also needed for animals recovering from various types of surgery. Recovery is much quicker when animals have a home environment in which to recuperate. Medical care for these animals is provided by our clinic staff at Animal Humane.
Fostering can be mutually beneficial to you and our companion animals. While providing foster care, you can observe the development of playful kittens and puppies with your family. Children can learn the responsibilities of properly caring for animals. If you aren't sure if you are ready for full-time pet ownership, short term fostering can fill the gap. It can help you decide if you are ready for the long-term commitment that adoption of a dog or cat brings.
If you are interested in providing temporary foster care, please contact Boni Galarneau, Foster Care Coordinator at 255-5523 ext. 119 or 991-0056 cell. A foster application can be emailed or snail mailed to you, or you can drop by the shelter to pick one up. |
